At the time you have made your experience with kiting and KAPing with the windspeed. You know in which windspeed you can leave your kite up for KAPing or you better let it be to protect the equipment.

Table of windspeed

Some time ago Mr. Beaufort thought about a table that shows the windspeed depending on signs in nature. This table shows the windpower in Beaufort (bft) and the sea description.

bft m/s km/h kn Description Sea Description
0 0-0,2 <1 <1 calm Sea like a mirror
1 0,3-1,5 1-5 1-3 Light air Ripples with the appearance of scales are formed,
but without foam crests.
2 1,6-3,3 6-11 4-6 Light breeze Small wavelets. Crests have a glassy appearance and do not break.
3 3,4-5,4 12-19 7-10 Gentle breeze Large wavelets. Crests begin to break. Foam of glassy appearance.
Scattered white horses.
4 5,5-7,9 20-28 11-16 Moderate breeze Small waves, becoming longer, fairly frequent white horses.
5 8,0-10,7 29-38 17-21 Fresh breeze Moderate waves, taking a more Pronounced long form;
many white horses are formed.
6 10,8-13,8 39-49 22-27 Strong breeze Large waves begin to form;
white foam crests are more extensive everywhere.
7 13,9-17,1 50-61 28-33 Near gale Sea heaps up and white foam from breaking waves begins to be blown
in streaks along the direction of the wind.
8 17,2-20,7 62-74 34-40 Gale Moderately high waves of greater length.
The foam is blown in well-marked streaks along the direction of the wind.
9 20,8-24,4 75-88 41-47 Strong gale High waves. Dense streaks of foam along the direction of the wind.
Spray may affect visibility.

Flytec Ferropilot - Windwatch

For some time I am using the windspeed-measuring device "Windwatch" from the firm Flytec. This device has got a small impeller in the inner of a ball. The ball can be turnd to protect the impeller on transport. The windspeed can be displayed in the following units: kts, km/h, m/s, mph, bft. You can see the windspeed at the moment, the topspeed and the average of the whole measuring-time. The display can be programmed in wide limits. So not used units can be switched off and the timing for calculating of the average of the windspeed can be set. The temperature can be displayd in F and C. The device is powerd by a 3V lithium-cell for approx. 100 000 measurings á 1 minute. The windspeed can be displayed in the range from 0,1 m/s up to 40 m/s. That should be enough for kiting. With the line you can hang the device around your neck so you always can take it with you without any problem.

Links to other KAPers and more you can find in my Surfers Guide.

I like to be available for questions, suggestions or experience exchange.

I would be very pleased about an entry in my visitor's book.
