Experience with the digitalcamera from SONY at the use for KAP.

After I observed the development of digitalcameras for some time, (resolution, memory-space, powerconsum.... are much better now), I bought the SONY DSC-F505 Cyber-shot. The camera has an optical 5x zoom from Carl Zeiss and different resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 pixel. You can make approx. 120 pictures in the resolution of 1600 x 1200 and approx. 230 pic´s in 1024 x 768 in the fine quality mode with the 64 mbyte memorystic.

When I did KAP with my first rigg and the Olympus AF1 on normal film, there was a lot of waste. I have to find a foto-laboratory where I needn´t to take all the pictures. When you use a digitalcamera you can look at the display and delete all pictures you needn´t. Also you don´t always have to think "should I trigger now or not, or is it better to wait a moment". You can make as many pictures you want to. There are no costs. The only thing is that the excitement while you are waiting of the laboratory is lost :-). But you only can get the right impression at you computer-monitor or the TV at home. So there is a rest of excitement to see the pictures in bigger size.

Experience with the KAP - Rigg # 2 and the SONY-camera.

The KAP-Rigg # 2 was built for use with the digitalcamera Cyber-shot DSC-F505 from Sony. The camera can be turned, tilt and triggert.

Auto switch off timer:

The camera has an auto switch off timer, which switches the camera off, when it is not operating for more then 3 minutes. At first I had doubts that this time runs out before I do the first shoot. But with a digitalcamera you can do the trigger as much as you want. So I trigger the camera before the rigg starts, and than a few more, so that the time doesn´t run out.

Powersupply:

The powersupply for the camara is only with a special Li-Ion-Akku with a voltage of 3,6 V and an energyquantity of 4,1 Wh. If you switch the display off in flight, thats enough for approx. 70 minutes.

Triggering:

When you trigger the camara by hand, the following happens: Press the trigger a little. The camara is measuring the object, the light and the distance. After a few seconds, when the camera is finish, there is an optical and an accoustic signal. Now you can press the trigger down, and the camera triggers. This is the course at any time you press the trigger. That means, there is always a triggerdelay.
When I trigger the camera in the rigg with a servo, there is a little problem: I can´t press the trigger only a little and wait for the signals. Sometimes I press the button at the transmitter, and the camera doesn´t trigger. Then I have to release the trigger and try it again. You can try the following: Switch off the automatc distance control of the camera and turn it to infinite. The camera should trigger faster than.

Triggercontrol:

Befor I start the camera, I opened the flashlight and switched it to "always flash". So it flashes at any time you trigger the camera, independently of the light around. So I can see this flashlight from the earth and can controll the triggering of the camera, at least when the camera is looking to me. After triggering I have to wait approx. 15 sec. so that the camera can fill up the flashlight again.

Sharpness and triggertime:

After I left the new camera in the air for the first time and tried to have a first look at the pictures I shoot, they all were blurred. The camera is using a programm-automatic and at this time the sun wasn´t shining. So the automatic turned to a low triggerspeed and the pictures are blurred.

Checklist:

Many things you have to think about. For don´t forget anything I made a little cheklist:

Some sample pictures and a video-clip

If you follow all these things, the digitalcamera makes excellent pictures. The maximum resolution is 1600 x 1200 pixel, the colordeep is 24 bit. This gives a calculated filesize of approx. 5,6 mbyte. If the filesize is so big, the memorychip will be filled with a few pictures. For that, the camera makes a JPEG-compression with two different quality modes: "normal and fine". The filesizes in the fine-mode is aprox. 350 up to 750 kbyte so you can make 120 pictures in 1600 x 1200 with a 64 mbyte memorystic. Of course, this filesizes are much too big for publishing them in the WEB. I reduce the size to a high of 400 pix with a second JPEG-compression.

Also the camera takes short video-clips with a max. resolution of 320 x 240 pixel and 15 sec. in time.

At the following pictures there are unchainged pics and a video-clip in the originalsize and quality of the camera.
