KAP-Rigg # 2
Building of my second KAP-Rig for the SONY-digitalcamera.

After I observed the development of digitalcameras for some time, (resolution, memory-space, powerconsum.... are much better now), I bought the SONY DSC-F505 Cyber-shot. This camera has an optical 5x zoom from Carl Zeiss and different resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 pixel. You can make approx. 120 pictures in the resolution of 1600 x 1200 and approx. 230 pics in 1024 x 768 in the fine quality mode with the 64 mbyte memorystic.

My lathe "EMCO Compact 5" (Oct.30.1999)
Milling at the Alu-profiles (Oct.31.1999)
Turning of the mounting for the tilt movement (Nov.01.1999)

For the new digitalcamera there must be a new rig now. Because I have a lathe and milling machine, the new rig should be out of alu-profiles like my first rig, too. In the first design, there was a complete frame for the camera. But the strong main mounting for the tilt movement made it possible to build the rig with one mounting. At the development of the rig, there is only the base plate and the angle alu with the main mounting ben left .

Control of the cameramounting for tilt with a lever (Nov.10.1999)
Triggerservo with gearbox (Nov.21.1999)
KAP-Rig at the first mounting without the turning device (Nov.28.1999)
Camera: SONY DSC-F505 Cyber-shot, 1024 x 768 fine

The servo for the tilt movement is mounted in the alu-pipe of the rig and the camara base plate is moved with a lever.
The movement of the camera-trigger needs only a short lift. That´s why the servomovement could be reduced with a gearbox. The servo could be very small and has a weight of only 9 gramm.
The right picture shows the rig at the first mounting without the servo and the gearbox for turning movement. At the camara base plate is an alu-angle mounted, to reduce the movement of the camera, when the trigger is pushed.

Parts of the belt-drive gearbox for the turning movement (Nov.28.1999)
Gearbox for the turning movement, ready mounted (Dec.08.1999)
Camera: SONY DSC-F505 Cyber-shot, 1024 x 768 fine

The rotating angle of a normal servo is only 90 degrees, but the movement of the rig must be 360 degrees. The rotation needs a gearbox to translate the rotation from the servo to 360 degrees. In my KAP-rig # 2 I used a belt-drive gearbox. I reduced the weight of the big gearwheel and mounted it on a normal servodisc.

Camera base plate, ready mounted. At the right side the main mounting. (Dec.01.1999)
KAP-Rig # 2 almost ready with receiver, akkus (250mAh NC) and telescopic antenna. (Dec.08.1999)
Camera: SONY DSC-F505 Cyber-shot, 1024 x 768 fine

On the left picture you see the complete camera base plate. On the right side there is the strong main mounting for the tilt movement. It was drilled out to reduce its weight. The wire for the trigger-servo is passed through the drill. The main mounting is protected with a snap ring on the other side.

On the right picture you can see the KAP-Rig # 2 almost ready. After the rig is ready mounted and the function is controlled, all parts can be reduced in weight by drilling or milling. Then the edges of all parts must be rounded and at last the remote control can be mounted.

KAP-Rig # 2 in action (Jun.22.2000)
Camera: Canon EOS 500

The flashlight is switched on to control the trigger of the camera. The antenna is used to see, in what direction the camera is looking. It´s an old pointing device.

I like to be available for questions, suggestions or experience exchange.

I would be very pleased about an entry in my visitor's book.
